Attack on Rocky

12-15-15  Sigh.  Today we had a trauma.  Thankfully, all will be ok, but we are so upset!  David and Rocky (Rocky on his leash) were sitting outside at the camper at Shady Pines RV Park just outside of Texarkana enjoying a beautiful day.  Rocky is pretty much deaf and has very poor vision.  He didn't see the 2 strays (one looked like a Cur and the other a Pitt mix) approaching until they got right up in our site. David wasn't too concerned as we've seen a couple of other strays at this rv park.  The others didn't cause any problem for us.  These 2 were different.  David tried "shooing" them away, but they kept their focus on Rocky.  Once Rocky discovered them, he stood up to bark and they lit into him. The Cur grabbed Rocky by the back of the neck with David hollering and kicking him the entire time. I will never forget the intensity of David's voice and Rocky yelping.  I ran out of the camper and for that split second when I came out, the dog looked up and let go long enough for David to pick Rocky up.  The dogs didn't get aggressive with, or even seem to notice us.  Both of us were kicking and hollering until they finally backed off.  A fellow rv'er came over to see about us, but our top priority was to get him Westridge Animal Hospital.

We got to stay with him for quite awhile.  They assessed him, talked frankly to us, and then kept him overnight.  Since he is nearly 14, they wanted to observe him overnight and do a little extra testing to be sure he could handle the surgery to put him back together.  The surgery will be tomorrow.

12-16-15:  The surgery went well. They considered keeping him another night since it was so severe, but Rocky let them know all afternoon that he wanted his people. So we picked him up late this afternoon.

They'd told us if the gashes were deep, they would probably have to put in a couple of drain tubes. Well he came home with 5!!

And too many staples to count.

He is on pain meds and that helps him stay still and get a lot of sleep.  We still cry.

The other rv'er had taken a pic of the Cur back in October for some reason.  We are thouroughly disgusted with people who let there dogs roam.  And with Bowie County for not having a leash law or animal control.  This is a problem that Shady Pines has to deal with too often.  Kete does a great job of trying to run them off.  And someone even went door to door in the area with Rocky's attackers following to try to find the owners.  Of course, nobody confessed. They obviously had a home because they were both clean and healthy.

A big thanks to Kete from Shady Pines for texting us and checking on our baby after we left.  She kept up every step of the way on his progress.

12-18-15:  Nothing like a little San Marcos bbq in Daddy's pocket to make an old injured dog get up on his hind legs!  This made us happy!  And he also barked for the first time today!

I will say that David and I are more nervous about walking him than he seems to be about getting out.  We jump and get ready to scoop him up at every little sound and movement.

12-20-15:  Arrived JCRV today in Ingram.  Boy was Rocky happy to be back at the place he loves and where everyone loves him!  He wagged his tail for the first time since the incident when Mr. Ken came up to greet him.  And when he saw Mr. Tom, he literally ran circles around him.  Does our hearts good!

BUT, Mr. Tom noticed his staples starting to come out.  We have an appt tomorrow with a Kerrville vet that Dawn and Ron recommended.  This is to serve as a follow up and to see if tubes can be removed.  But tonight we called the on-call vet and he convinced us it'd be ok to wait til tomorrow. Tonight he scratched one of his drain tubes out.  That sucker was at least 12 inches long!

12-21-15:  Today we took him in to see Dr. Kim.  Our appt wasn't until 2:00, but we were there this morning when the doors opened and she was gracious enough to examine him.  She said she'd have to put him under again, remove the staples, and stitch him up.

We got to pick him up this afternoon and wow!  He looks better.  Drain tubes are out, but we still will keep the t-shirts on him until the drainage stops.  The stitches look so much more comfy than staples.

Can you guess what happened here?  Uggh.  Such a fluke.  I was reading in bed and David had gone to play golf.  Often he'll sit on the floor to see if David comes back in.  I called him to come up in the bed with me, but he didn't.  No whimpering or anything, so I didn't think there was a problem.  After a few minutes I got up to pick him up and he was hung up in the heater vent.  Made me so sad.  But he wasn't hurt. He won't be wearing his dog tag any more around the camper.

He was very happy to get cards from Cooper, his JCRV peeps, and Edith/Spice.

12-23-15:  Had his follow up with Dr. Kim and she thought he looked great!  We will come back in a week or so to get stitches out, hopefully.

12-25-15:  He seemed to enjoy what Santa brought him also!

12-31-15:  Said our "cya's" to our JCRV peeps.  Rocky loves Mr. Tom and Mr. Ken. This was good medicine for him!

1-6-16:  Went back to Dr. Kim today and she was very pleased with they way he has healed.  So she removed all staples and released him.

1-11-16:  Back to enjoying a sunny day outside the camper.

I always thought I'd be pretty reasonable about spending a lot of money of an older dog.  But $1000 dollars later, I'd do it all again if I needed to.  He's worth every nickle.

Oh, I guess we spent even more than that, because now we have a gun.

Today was a bittersweet day.  Sweet because we got to enjoy James Goff's 4th birthday with all the Goff's.  Bitter because they had it at Liberty-Eylau Middle School!.  David and I have been itching and breaking out since we found out it was going to be there. LOL.

Gerald and Juanita Goff's wedding pic

12-14-15:  Enjoyed an early supper with Bill and Pam in Texarkana.  It's so rare that just the 4 of us get to spend time together.  We had a great visit.  Got a wonderful call from them when they were on their way home.  Backstory- At Jakeb and Lacey's wedding, they displayed my parents' wedding pic. It was the one and only copy.  Afterwards, it was nowhere to be found.  We all reluctantly chalked it up to a loss.  Tonight, little Joseph broke a frame that had Jakeb and Lacey's pic in it.  Behind it was the missing picture of my parents.  Weren't they beautiful?  Thanks Joseph!!!

Ashleigh Phillips and Laura Lee Richardson Singh
Laura got together with one of her cousins tonight -- it's rare that they are in town at the same time. So glad they got to spend some time together. These 2 were born about 2 days apart.

12-15-15:  A beautiful day in the neighborhood!  David is shampooing the carpet, I'm doing laundry, Rocky is soaking up the sun and pleasant temps.  Got a call from Jeanette Malchow to touch base about next month's gig at South Llano River State Park.  Then.......... all hell broke loose.  Rocky was viciously attacked by a couple of strays in the RV park.  With David right there!  More about that in another post.

12-16-15:  Rocky's surgery was a success and he was released to us late this afternoon.

Laura and I went out to get our Mexican fix and ran into Jakeb and family.  So we enjoyed supper with them at Amigo Juan's

Edith and me enjoying our Christmas gifts from each other.

12-17-15:  Celebrated an early Christmas tonight with Edith, Laura, and Gus.  Then had to say "cya later" as we are leaving tomorrow morning.

12-18-15:  Left T-town this morning.  Came across our first Buc-ees in Terrell, TX.  These are the coolest convenience stores ever.  They're massive!

Rocky and David

12-18-15:  Left Texarkana to head for the hill country.  Man, it's getting harder to leave family.  But I do look forward to our adventures at the same time.  Spent tonight in Terrell, TX at Bluebonnet. Rocky barked for the first time today!  And got up on hind legs when he sniffed out some bbq in David's pocket on our walk.

12-19-15:  Spent tonight in San Marcos. And found another Buc-ees.

getting close to Kerrville

cards from JCRV peeps and Cooper

12-20-15:  Arrived JCRV!  So nice to see so many familiar faces here!  Dawn, Ron, and Cooper welcomed Rocky with cards signed by all our peeps here, and one from Coop!  Rocky feels the love! He got pretty close to Mr. Ken and wagged his tail ---- we've missed seeing that the past few days! He literally ran circles around Tom.  He sure seemed to remember everyone and the place!
Later today we notices his staples were starting to come out.  Not good.

much better
12-21-15:  Found a wonderful vet in Kerrville, thanks to Dawn's recommendation.  Dr. Kim took great care of him today.

this selfie stick is difficult -- it went in the trash after this

For supper, Jerri and George organized a wienie roast down by the river (Johnson Creek).  Really loved visiting with them and the Perkins' about the past year of workamping.

12-22-15:  Jerri and I went over to Sarah's to play Panties today.  Before the card game, we picked Sarah up and took her to the Christmas get-together at her hair salon, then we tried the NEW Chic-fil-a (or Chick a fill, as Sarah calls it).  Happy that Kerrville finally got one, but they have a looooong way to go on efficiency.  Back at Sarah's, we got to know her new dog, Buttons.  Adorable!  She looks like a miniature Lizzie!

JJ, me, Jeanette, and Uwe

12-24-15:  David and I drove over to Junction to look around the state park where we'll be volunteering this winter, visited with JJ, Jeanette and Uwe, and met with Ranger Holly.  We're jazzed!

Christmas Eve in Kerrville

George, Ron, Jerri, Dawn, David, and me

wonderful friends

Tonight we went to a Christmas Eve service with Ron, Dawn, Jerri, and George at St Paul UMC in Kerrville.  It was lovely, as was the night with the Full Christmas Moon (Cold Moon) nearly at it's
peak. Wonderful night with special friends.

Thx to all the family who sent Christmas pix to us!  Helps us to feel not so far away!

12-26-15:  David and I did a little shopping today to try to catch some after Christmas sales.  Not too impressive, but the also not too crowded.  So that was good.  East TX got slammed tonight with tornadoes.  The metroplex really caught it.  Prayers for our friends out that way.

Tonight we played Panties at the clubhouse with the Cooper's and the Perkins'. Fun!

12-27-15:  Laura started her flights to India today.  I watch them on Flightaware.com.  It was a little extra nerve-racking this time because of the weather.  Flights from DFW were delayed hours upon hours.  Which effects all connection flights.

Jerri, me, and Dawn

What better way for me to be comforted than to go to Comfort, TX with my girls.  It's been a couple of years since I got to visit my fave yarn shop.  So that helped!

Tonight, we had snow!!!  Just a dusting most of the night. I had to stay up til about 1:00 to see the accumulation.  But it was beautiful!

I think my mom had a mink like this one

Santa likes some good Mexican food after Christmas, too

12-30-15:  A wonderful hill country day.  David played golf with the guys, Jerri and I did some resale shopping and had lunch at Mamacita's.  Then she let me beat her at Panties later this afternoon.  Love my bestie!

12-31-15:  Said our "cya laters" at JCRV, then headed down to South Llano River State Park for our gig.  Jeanette and Uwe broke us in with our duties and we met with Ranger Holly.

Looking forward to our winter gig.  Tho we won't have good internet or phone service, we will def be getting into Junction as much as possible for updates.  (and for that reason, picture labels will come later)

Ready for the Liberty Bowl!

Happy wintering!
